Kilchoman 16 Y.O. Release 2023
Nose: Delightfully rich with a creamy citrus sweetness and layers of cooked apples, pears, plums and nutmeg.
Palate: a masterful balance of festive spices, fresh vanilla, tropical fruit and smouldering peat smoke.
Finish: dried mango and aprigots with bbq smoke and lasting mouth-coating honey sweetness.
Kilchoman, an Islay farm distillery, kept a portion of its heavily peated distillate and aged it for six years in 38 first-fill ex-bourbon casks before marrying it for another two years in two vats that held 6,000 liters of Portuguese red wine with medium-high charring levels (two and three). This 16 Y.O. release was then bottled at 50% ABV per Scotch Whiskey Association regulations, with no additional colorants or filtering. this release is the oldest global bottling to date. A combination of 21 casks have been maturing for over 16 years, predominantly ex-bourbon barrels with a hint of ex-oloroso sherry, creating a perfectly balanced single malt.
