Robert McConnell Old London Pebble Cut: review

Robert McConnell Old London Pebble Cut is a flake tobacco made of long slices, produced through an ancient pressing method. Once cut, the flakes are rolled and neatly arranged inside the tin.

Visually, the bright yellow of the Virginia stands out, contrasted by the darker tones of Perique and Black Cavendish.

On the nose, the classic Virginia notes are predominant, enriched by pleasant hints of ripe fruit and chocolate.

When loading the tobacco pipe, it’s easy to adjust the length of the flake according to the size of the bowl, whether you choose to smoke it whole or rubbed out. We recommend trying it whole: compared to other flakes, it’s surprisingly easy to manage during the smoke.

Though it's essentially a Virginia blend, it is well supported by Perique and Black Cavendish, which broaden its aromatic profile. The tin also mentions the presence of Oriental tobaccos, but Virginia remains the clear star, with its typical notes taking center stage.

The Perique, with its mildly spicy and peppery touch, stays in the background. As is often the case with this component, it’s an aroma you need to “seek out.”

All in all, Old London Pebble Cut is a great choice for lovers of Virginias and flakes: an easygoing blend, perfect for summer smoking. Even those accustomed to English Mixtures or more complex blends may find it a pleasant, lighter alternative.
